The massive Rosenwald Courts apartment complex in Chicago marks the conclusion of a historic renovation and restoration project, which will potentially drive further restorations on the South Side. The facades of eight buildings were renovated, including the glazing of approximately 16,000 square feet of insulating glass windows manufactured by Wojan Windows.

Wojan utilized AGC’s 4th Surface Technology™ for the dual insulating glass, incorporating Energy Select 40 #2 and Energy Select 73 #4 for improved energy efficiency and greater indoor comfort for the building occupants.

U4 is ideal for bringing older projects up to code, with a use of a solar control low-e coating on the outboard lite (surface 2), combined with AGC’s pyrolytic hard-coated passive solar low-e on the inboard lite (surface 4) to improve thermal insulation. The two-acre courtyard was also renovated to complete this lovely renovation project that will provide 239 units split between senior and affordable housing, one and two bedroom apartments.

This property was conceived by Julius Rosenwald, the Sears retail magnate who invested part of his fortune into creating affordable housing for middle class blacks. The buildings opened in 1930, and once served as homes for local luminaries such as Quincy Jones, Nat “King” and Gwendolyn Brooks.
